Reflection
Full Show
Composed by Rob Stein Percussion by Trent Gronewold and Eric Shriver Originally commissioned for: Downers Grove South High School - Downers Grove, IL
What do you think when you see your own reflection in a mirror? This fantastic show takes the audience on a journey of self-reflection, through the challenges that come along with looking within, and to the beauty that comes from embracing your reflection, the good and the bad.
1. Conform
Our first inclination upon seeing ourselves in the mirror can sometimes be frustration, disappointment, or even anger, as we try to conform to society’s expectations. This show expresses these emotions right away with a forceful yet painful impact in a minor key. A percussion feature leads directly to an impressive trumpet feature, which is followed directly by additional features for other sections, each one trying to outdo the last as we all try to outdo our own self image each and every day. As the movement ends, we hear the sound of a mirror breaking, as our frustration can no longer be contained.
2. Reflect
In moments of weakness, our reflection can make us to just that – reflect. A trio of soloists (horn, flute, trumpet) sing a beautiful introspective song about searching for our place in the world, which slowly sings a song of mournfulness, which are followed by an accessible yet showy percussion feature.
3. Embrace
There is a special kind of freedom that comes along with accepting your own reflection. This high-energy movement cascades through major keys and themes of positivity as we begin to understand how we fit in the world… as the one and only unique individual that we are.
