SHATTERED
Full Show
Composed and Arranged by Rob Stein Percussion by Trent Gronewold and Eric Shriver Originally commissioned for: Davis High School - Kaysville, UT
SHATTERED fuses one of the most recognizable melodies ever: Beethoven’s Für Elise, with a compelling visual idea to create a show your students, fans, and judges won’t be able to get enough of! This show has unlimited potential for visual and thematic interpretation. Musically, we hear the possibilities of what can happen when the Für Elise melody is shattered down to its basic pieces, and put back together with original twists. The shattering glass effects throughout the show allow for ample visual creativity and effect, along with numerous opportunities for choreography. This production gives your design team a number of creative directions to go, we look forward to seeing how YOU choose to interpret it!
Movement 1
An oboe soloist opens the show with a mournful melody loosely based on Für Elise, allowing your audience and judges to immediately relate to the show. This moment quickly builds to an in-your-face impact that is sure to get your audience on their feet right from the start, as we hear sounds of broken glass in the background. Your percussion section has some time to shine next, including a hip-hop inspired battery feature underscored by modern sound design which your students will LOVE. This blends seamlessly into section features for your woodwinds, then brass. The movement concludes with an exciting and massively entertaining jazz segment, featuring a swingin’ saxophone quartet, leading to a full band impact that is sure to bring the general effect. Our oboe soloist returns to solo over the impact, so make sure you have good amplification – you’ll need it!
*A note on the soloists – An oboe is the ideal sound for the opening solo. This could be a real oboe, or an EWI. For the ending solo over the swing section, it could be the same soloist, or a strong lead trumpet player that can nail a high D to the wall every time (Rob’s personal preference!)
Movement 2
We hear shades of Beethoven return as we release the energy built up in the first movement. A flugelhorn solo sings a beautiful original melody while your front ensemble shows off underneath. Lush harmonies provide support throughout the movement, as your students’ musicianship can shine. The movement builds to an impactful climax, punctuated by more broken glass sound effects.
Movement 3
Percussion gets to take the lead as the third movement begins – with feature moments for all your different subsections. This portion of the show features innovative sound design, and plenty of room for visual exploration with your winds, as they have plenty of time without the horns on their faces. Once the horns come back in, we build up to a final impact, finally in a major tonality but still with shades of Beethoven keeping us grounded in the theme. Your oboe soloist brings the show to a joyful conclusion, though we never lose sight of the iconic repeated half-step motif that is so well known from the Beethoven.
