A Matter of Time
Composed by Rob Stein Percussion by Maverick Peterson Originally commissioned for: Newnan High School - Newnan, GA
“A Matter of Time” explores the literal and figurative aspects of time, in our lives, and in music. Driving syncopated rhythms, multi-meter passages and high definition electronics provide maximum general effect, creating an entertaining and exciting production.
1. Time Flies
The show begins with high definition clock samples layered over each other, immediately displaying the theme of the show taking the audience to the edge of their seats. Winds and percussion layer in rhythms that create an effect of time speeding up before the first big impact. Impressive syncopated features, driving tempos and powerful chords conclude this energetic opener.
2. Lost in Time
Slower tempo, dissonant chords and high definition electronics take the audience to a dreamy, free floating state. A lyrical and mysterious clarinet solo trades phrases with a gorgeous French horn quartet (mellophones, trombones or baritones would also work well), then the band slowly builds thick, major tonality chords to a bright and beautiful impact.
3. Time Is Running Out
Numerous alarm clock sounds layer in, seamlessly transitioning into an intense percussion feature. Winds enter in with an aggressive impact, leading into challenging multi-meter features that culminate an an impressive display of technique and power.
4. Now Is The Time
A smooth transition into a major tonality development in the front ensemble. Brass enters with flowing chords as woodwinds display a technical feature in a half time feel, which is then repeated in a double time feel, showing the perception of time speeding up. Building tension, the show closes with an intense and powerful reprise of music from the opener.
